Sri Lanka to implement daily power cuts through late October

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has given formal approval for scheduled power cuts to continue across the island through October 21, according to an announcement from the National System Operator.

Under the approved schedule, the country has been divided into four distribution groups, each designated to experience a single one-hour power interruption daily. The outages are scheduled to occur between 4:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., a timeframe chosen to minimize disruption during peak evening hours while managing the nation's electricity demand.

The National System Operator confirmed the arrangement reflects ongoing challenges in matching power generation capacity with national demand. The rotating schedule ensures that no single region bears the full burden of daily interruptions, with each group cycling through the designated outage period.

The measure represents a continuation of load-shedding protocols implemented as Sri Lanka navigates its energy sector difficulties. Consumers have been advised to plan accordingly during the specified evening window to mitigate the impact on household and commercial activities.
