Sri Lanka to install CCTV cameras across all police stations

The Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler, announced yesterday that CCTV cameras will be installed throughout police stations across the country as part of a comprehensive monitoring initiative. The surveillance project is designed to strengthen oversight mechanisms and enhance transparency within police operations.

According to the announcement, the procurement process for the camera systems is already underway. Once installed, the recorded footage will be systematically reviewed to monitor activities within police stations and ensure compliance with operational standards.

The move represents an effort by the police service to implement technological solutions for internal accountability. Officials indicated that arrangements are being finalized to ensure consistent monitoring through the CCTV network, though specific timelines for installation and implementation details were not disclosed.

The initiative comes amid growing emphasis on institutional transparency and oversight mechanisms within law enforcement agencies across the region. The project is expected to cover all police stations, though phasing details and budgetary allocations remain to be clarified.
