Sri Lanka to prioritise waste management and recycling in 2027 Budget

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has signalled that environmental sustainability will take centre stage in the 2027 Budget, with waste management, reduction and recycling initiatives receiving significant priority.

Addressing the matter, the Prime Minister emphasised the government's commitment to leaving behind a clean and green environment rather than contaminated soil and plastic-filled seas. "What we leave for future generations should not be a legacy of environmental degradation," she stated, underscoring the need for immediate action on waste-related challenges.

The policy shift reflects growing concerns over waste accumulation across the island, where inadequate disposal infrastructure and limited recycling frameworks have compounded environmental pressures. By elevating waste management in budgetary allocations, the government aims to strengthen both enforcement mechanisms and public awareness campaigns around waste reduction practices.

The announcement aligns with broader regional trends toward circular economy models, as South Asian nations increasingly grapple with mounting solid waste volumes. Officials have indicated that the 2027 Budget will fund enhanced collection systems, treatment facilities, and community-led recycling programmes to create sustainable waste management ecosystems.
