Sri Lanka to tighten SIM card regulations amid surge in misuse

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is moving to introduce new regulations governing SIM card issuance and use, citing growing concerns over their misuse in illegal activities.

TRCSL Director General Bandula Herath announced the regulatory overhaul during a media briefing, indicating that the proliferation of SIM cards obtained through irregular channels has become a significant problem requiring intervention.

The irregularities have reportedly facilitated various unlawful activities, prompting regulators to strengthen controls over how telecommunications operators distribute and manage SIM cards. The new framework is expected to impose stricter verification procedures and accountability measures on service providers.
