Sri Lanka tourism sector targeted for MICE expansion push

Sri Lanka's tourism promotion agencies are intensifying efforts to position the island as a competitive destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism, a high-value segment that generates substantial economic returns.

The coordinated promotional campaign targets local travel industry stakeholders, encouraging operators to develop and market MICE-related services across the country's key business and leisure destinations. Industry representatives are being briefed on the growing global demand for conference facilities, corporate retreat venues, and large-scale event infrastructure.

MICE tourism is considered a strategic growth area for Sri Lanka's travel sector, as it typically attracts higher-spending visitors and generates sustained employment across hospitality, transportation, and ancillary services. The segment also supports infrastructure development and encourages year-round tourism activity, reducing seasonal fluctuations that characterise traditional beach and cultural tourism.

Travel industry professionals are being encouraged to upgrade facilities and develop specialized packages to capture emerging opportunities in the regional MICE market, where competition from neighbouring destinations remains significant.
