Sri Lanka trade body cautions against laws jeopardizing EU trade privileges

Industry representatives have raised concerns that new laws under consideration in Parliament may conflict with the conditions required to maintain Sri Lanka's GSP+ status, a trade arrangement that provides duty-free access to EU markets for thousands of products.

The GSP+ scheme imposes stringent requirements on participating nations, including adherence to international labor standards, environmental protections, and governance benchmarks. Trade organizations have indicated that certain legislative initiatives could place Sri Lanka at risk of losing this valuable market access if they fail to align with these internationally recognized standards.

The warnings come at a critical juncture for Sri Lanka's export sector, which relies heavily on preferential trade arrangements to maintain competitiveness in global markets. The country's apparel, tea, and agricultural sectors are particularly dependent on EU market access under the current scheme.

Government and parliamentary officials have not yet responded formally to the trade body's concerns. Industry stakeholders are expected to engage with policymakers to ensure that any new legislation takes into account the compliance requirements necessary to preserve GSP+ benefits.
