The Sri Lankan Business Council (SLBC) in the UAE has unveiled an expanded approach to breast cancer advocacy that transcends traditional awareness-raising activities, focusing instead on tangible interventions and community support mechanisms.

Recognising that awareness campaigns alone are insufficient to address the burden of breast cancer, the initiative combines educational outreach with practical health services, psychological support, and economic assistance for patients and survivors. The programme targets both the Sri Lankan expatriate community in the UAE and stakeholders in Sri Lanka, acknowledging breast cancer as a significant public health challenge across South Asia.

The SLBC's multifaceted approach includes facilitating access to screening services, providing educational resources about early detection and treatment options, and establishing support networks for patients navigating their healthcare journey. The council has also focused on addressing financial barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking timely medical intervention.

Official statements from the SLBC emphasise that meaningful progress against breast cancer requires coordinated action across multiple sectors, including business, healthcare, and civil society. The initiative reflects growing recognition among diaspora organisations of their role in strengthening health systems and support structures in their countries of origin.

The programme underscores how regional business networks can leverage their resources and platforms to drive substantive health outcomes beyond awareness campaigns, positioning the SLBC as a model for corporate-led health advocacy in the South Asian diaspora.
