The Defence Ministry confirmed yesterday that Sri Lankan troops had successfully completed a counter-terrorism exercise conducted jointly with Russian military counterparts in Russia. The 75-member contingent, comprising both officers and enlisted personnel, returned to the island following the conclusion of the training programme.

The exercise provided instruction in a range of specialized operational techniques essential to modern counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism work. Training modules included helicopter rappelling, close-quarters combat, sniper operations, ambush tactics, and unmanned aerial vehicle operations.

The joint exercise reflects the defence cooperation framework between Sri Lanka and Russia and provides practical exposure to operational methodologies used by international military forces. Such training programmes aim to enhance the technical capabilities and tactical proficiency of Sri Lanka's military personnel in counter-terrorism operations.

The Defence Ministry's announcement of the exercise's completion marks the conclusion of the training deployment, with all personnel returning to their regular duties.
