Sri Lanka's higher education sector has faced setbacks in the latest QS Asia University Rankings, with the majority of the country's represented institutions moving down the table. The University of Colombo, the nation's premier university, dropped 46 places to rank 364th across Asia, marking a significant decline from its previous standing.
Despite the fall, the University of Colombo retained its position as Sri Lanka's highest-ranked university in the regional assessment. The QS rankings, published by Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluate universities across Asia based on academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, international diversity, and research metrics.
Of the 12 Sri Lankan universities included in the latest rankings, eight experienced declines, pointing to broader challenges within the country's tertiary education landscape. The results raise questions about the competitive position of Sri Lankan institutions in an increasingly competitive regional higher education environment.
The rankings are closely monitored by students, academics, and policymakers as key indicators of institutional quality and standing. Sri Lankan universities have historically faced resource constraints and infrastructure limitations that can impact their international performance metrics.
