Srinagar opens first zero-carbon 'waste-to-wonder' garden with vintage vehicles

Srinagar has unveiled its first 'waste-to-wonder' garden, a sustainability-focused horticultural project that demonstrates innovative reuse of discarded materials and vintage equipment. The garden operates with zero carbon emissions, powered exclusively by solar panels, marking a significant step toward environmentally conscious urban development in the Kashmir region.

According to Masooma Banoo, Director of Floriculture for Kashmir, the garden's construction relied entirely on donated installations rather than new purchases. This approach not only reduced project costs but also aligned with the garden's core philosophy of transforming waste into functional, aesthetically pleasing installations.

Among the garden's most distinctive features are vintage vehicles repurposed as planters, including a heritage HMT tractor and a jeep from the 1970s. These converted vehicles serve dual purposes, functioning as both unique landscape elements and practical growing containers, exemplifying creative waste management practices.

The project represents a broader commitment to sustainable horticultural development in Kashmir, combining environmental responsibility with heritage preservation. By utilizing recycled materials and renewable energy, the garden demonstrates that public spaces can be developed without depleting resources or increasing carbon footprints, potentially serving as a model for similar initiatives across the region.
