Stakeholders back II PU scores in NEET ranking system overhaul

Educational stakeholders have proposed significant changes to how NEET rankings are calculated, suggesting that Class XII or II PU scores be factored into the final assessment alongside multiple examination attempts. The recommendations represent efforts to diversify the evaluation criteria for India's premier medical entrance examination.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CESS) is consolidating these suggestions from various educational bodies and institutions. These will be formally submitted as recommendations to the High Powered Task Force examining broader National Testing Agency reforms, which is headed by Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys.

The task force has been tasked with examining structural and operational improvements to the NTA, which administers NEET and other major entrance examinations. The inclusion of intermediate board examination scores alongside entrance test performance could provide a more holistic assessment mechanism for medical college admissions.

Multiple examination systems would allow candidates additional attempts to improve their scores, potentially reducing the pressure-driven nature of single-attempt entrance tests. This approach reflects ongoing discussions in Indian educational policy regarding balanced assessment methodologies that account for both standardized testing and academic performance across multiple years.

The recommendations are part of a broader examination of testing agency frameworks in India, with findings expected to shape future entrance examination protocols for medical and other professional courses.
