Stampede at Kolkata Durga Puja pandal leaves dozens injured

A stampede-like incident unfolded at a Durga Puja pandal in Chorebagan, Kolkata, on Tuesday evening as heavy rain combined with large crowds created chaotic conditions. The incident occurred during Saptami celebrations at the venue, which drew substantial footfall despite deteriorating weather.

Responding to the emergency, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari visited a hospital to assess the situation and meet with those affected. The state administration confirmed that approximately 40 people sustained injuries in the crush. Casualties were quickly transported to Calcutta Medical College Hospital for treatment and observation.

The exact circumstances leading to the stampede are still being investigated by local authorities. Preliminary reports suggest the combination of intense rainfall and an unusually dense gathering at the pandal created hazardous conditions that resulted in people being knocked down in the confusion.

The incident has renewed concerns about crowd management and safety protocols at major religious gatherings during the annual Durga Puja festival, which draws millions of devotees across West Bengal and beyond.
