Starlink has built its operations in India with a focus on meeting the country's security requirements and regulatory standards, according to Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX.
Speaking at India Mobile Congress 2026, Dreyer said the company has implemented controls at multiple levels to ensure compliance with Indian regulations. "We've built our Starlink operations specifically for India in recognition of Indian security requirements and other regulations, establishing controls at every layer for India, and keeping Indian user data within India," she said.
The company has already made significant investments in ground infrastructure across the country, including 20 gateway sites comprising hundreds of antennas to support its operations. This physical infrastructure represents Starlink's commitment to serving the Indian market while adhering to local requirements.
Starlink is among three companies that have received licences from India's government to provide satellite communication services. However, the companies still require spectrum allocation and security clearance from authorities before they can commence commercial operations. The regulatory approvals remain a critical next step for satellite communications providers seeking to enter India's telecommunications market.
