Stolen bridge parts blamed for Magallanes Flyover debris incidents
The Department of Public Works and Highways has attributed falling debris on Manila's busy Edsa Magallanes Flyover to the theft of critical expansion joint components. The missing parts have compromised the structural integrity of the southbound section of the major thoroughfare.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) identified theft as the cause of debris falling along the southbound portion of the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) Magallanes Flyover in Makati City. In a Wednesday advisory, the agency reported that missing expansion joint parts had weakened the bridge structure, posing safety risks to motorists using one of Metro Manila's most critical traffic corridors.
Expansion joints are essential components designed to accommodate the natural movement and stress on bridge structures caused by temperature changes and traffic loads. Their absence can trigger cascading damage to surrounding structural elements, increasing the likelihood of debris falls and potentially compromising the overall safety of the facility.
The DPWH's disclosure underscores ongoing security challenges at major infrastructure facilities across the capital region. The loss of bridge components through theft represents both a financial burden on public resources and a serious public safety concern, as falling debris poses hazards to vehicles and passengers traveling beneath the structure.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for enhanced monitoring and security measures at critical transportation infrastructure. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the stolen parts have been recovered or if investigations into the theft are ongoing.
