A prominent Malaysian lawmaker has appealed for restraint in online harassment targeting a lawyer representing police officers in a high-profile assault case. Hassan, the Member of Parliament for Pasir Gudang, stressed that legal professionals should be permitted to discharge their duties without facing social media intimidation or personal attacks. The MP's statement comes as attention intensifies around the Shuhaily assault case, which has drawn significant public scrutiny. Hassan emphasised that the principle of legal representation forms a cornerstone of the justice system, allowing all parties—regardless of their background—to mount proper defence or prosecution. Lawyers performing their professional duties, he added, should not become targets for online vitriol and should be allowed to operate within the bounds of the law without fear of harassment or character assassination through digital platforms.
