Strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolts eastern Japan, Tokyo felt tremors

An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.9 hit the Ibaraki prefecture region at 2am local time on Wednesday, sending noticeable tremors across the Tokyo metropolitan area and surrounding regions. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed the epicentre was located in the southern portion of Ibaraki prefecture, one of the prefectures closest to the capital.

The early-morning quake was widely felt across eastern Japan, with residents in Tokyo reporting distinct jolts that briefly disrupted sleep in the densely populated region. However, authorities swiftly assessed the seismic event and determined there was no risk of a tsunami, allowing life to return to normal for the millions affected.

Japan, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity. Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered moderate and typically cause minimal structural damage when building codes are strictly observed, as they are throughout Japan. The country maintains one of the world's most sophisticated earthquake monitoring and early warning systems.
