Strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Mid-Atlantic Ridge
A significant 6.7 magnitude earthquake has struck the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge, according to seismic monitoring data. The undersea tremor occurred along the major tectonic feature that runs down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The earthquake struck the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent tectonic plate boundary that extends for thousands of kilometers beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Seismic activity along this ridge is common, as the North American and Eurasian plates continue to spread apart at a rate of approximately 2.5 centimeters per year.
The 6.7 magnitude tremor represents a significant but not unusual event for this tectonically active region. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge regularly experiences earthquakes as magma rises from the Earth's mantle, pushing the plates apart and creating new oceanic crust.
Given the undersea location, the earthquake poses no immediate threat to populated coastal areas. However, scientists continue to monitor seismic activity along mid-ocean ridges to better understand plate tectonics and the geological processes that shape Earth's ocean basins.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the waters south of Africa, remains one of the longest mountain ranges on Earth, with much of its structure hidden beneath the ocean's surface.
