Strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake rattles Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula

The earthquake hit at 9:05 am Indian Standard Time, with its epicentre located approximately 123 kilometres southwest of Vilyuchinsk, a port city in the Kamchatka Peninsula. According to seismic monitoring agencies, the quake occurred at a depth of 152 kilometres, classifying it as a deep-focus earthquake.

Authorities confirmed that the significant tremor posed no tsunami risk to the region despite its considerable magnitude. The Kamchatka Peninsula, one of Russia's most seismically active zones, sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position on major tectonic plate boundaries.

The remote peninsula, located in Russia's far eastern reaches, is sparsely populated outside its main settlements. Vilyuchinsk, the nearest major city to the epicentre, is home to approximately 25,000 residents. Preliminary reports indicated no immediate damage or casualties from the earthquake, though detailed assessments were ongoing.
