Strong Agniveer Performance Review Triggers Service Terms Revision

The Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani indicated Wednesday that an extensive performance review of Agniveers has prompted the government to reassess the terms governing their service in the armed forces.

The four-year evaluation found Agniveers demonstrated strong technical capabilities, high motivation levels and maintained rigorous physical fitness standards, according to General Subramani. The positive assessment across these key parameters has led defence authorities to revisit the existing framework under which these personnel operate.

The Agniveer scheme, introduced in 2022, represents a significant shift in India's military recruitment model. The programme aims to bring younger personnel into the armed forces on fixed-term contracts before transitioning some to permanent roles.

General Subramani's comments suggest the military establishment views the initial cohort of Agniveers as meeting operational expectations. The government's decision to review service terms follows the constructive findings of the performance assessment, indicating potential modifications to career progression and tenure policies.

Further details regarding the specific changes being considered to Agniveer service conditions are expected as the defence ministry completes its review process.
