Strong earthquake strikes central Japan, injures dozens

A significant earthquake measuring magnitude 5.7 struck Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan, causing injuries to at least dozens of people and widespread disruption across the region.

The tremor, which occurred west of Tokyo, shattered windows in buildings throughout the prefecture and forced authorities to suspend rail services in affected areas. Emergency response teams were mobilised to assess damage and provide assistance to those injured.

Japan's meteorological agency confirmed the earthquake's magnitude and location, with initial reports indicating that most injuries were minor. Authorities conducted a systematic review of infrastructure across Shizuoka Prefecture to determine the full extent of damage.

Rail operators halted services temporarily as a precautionary measure while they inspected tracks and facilities for structural integrity. Train services gradually resumed following safety clearances, though some delays were expected to persist throughout the day.

The earthquake serves as a reminder of Japan's continued vulnerability to seismic activity, situated as it is along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Residents in the region were urged to remain alert and follow guidance from local disaster management authorities.
