The earthquake struck at 9:22 p.m. local time, originating from a point approximately 115 kilometers south of Balut Island in Sarangani, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The tremor occurred at a depth of 93 kilometers beneath the seabed.

Phivolcs classified the quake as tectonic in origin, indicating it resulted from movement along geological faults rather than volcanic activity.
