Strong earthquake strikes Indonesia's Sumbawa region
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck the Sumbawa region in Indonesia, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

The moderate-strength earthquake hit the Sumbawa region, part of Indonesia's eastern archipelago, at approximately 10 kilometres below the surface. The relatively shallow depth of the tremor would have increased the potential for ground shaking across the affected area.
Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active zones, and experiences frequent earthquakes. The archipelago's position at the convergence of several tectonic plates makes it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences, an internationally recognised authority on seismic monitoring, confirmed the magnitude measurement. Sumbawa, located in the Lesser Sunda Islands, is home to several hundred thousand residents across its mountainous terrain.
No immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have been confirmed at this stage. Authorities in Indonesia typically assess the impact of earthquakes in the region and issue updates as information becomes available.
