Strong GST-driven sales last year create headwinds for Navratri auto demand

Overall vehicle sales across India grew just 2% during the opening nine days of Navratri this year, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), masking a significant weakness in the passenger vehicle segment. Passenger car sales contracted 14% during the same period, reflecting the challenging year-on-year comparisons created by an exceptional demand cycle in 2024. The GST-driven purchasing spree last year had pulled forward sales into the Navratri festival period, leaving dealers facing steeper headwinds this time around.

The slowdown highlights how policy-driven demand surges can create volatile baseline effects for subsequent periods. Last year's surge in vehicle purchases was largely attributed to consumers accelerating their buying decisions ahead of potential GST rate adjustments and changes in vehicle pricing structures. This front-loaded demand has resulted in a significantly higher comparison base for the 2025 festival season.

While overall sales managed modest growth, the divergence between total vehicle sales and passenger car sales points to relatively stronger performance in the commercial and two-wheeler segments. Industry analysts note that the passenger vehicle weakness is not indicative of broader market sentiment but rather a mathematical consequence of the exceptional demand environment a year earlier. The coming weeks will be closely watched by industry participants to determine whether the baseline normalizes and consumer purchasing patterns stabilize in the post-Navratri period.
