Structural collapse feared as dike damage accelerates flooding in Zambales

SAN MARCELINO, Zambales — A residential structure collapsed Friday as floodwaters inundated Barangay Sta. Fe following days of uninterrupted rainfall that caused a nearby river to overflow its banks and overwhelm existing defenses.

The incident marks the latest in a mounting series of disasters affecting the coastal community, where a protective dike has sustained cumulative damage over successive flooding events. Officials said the structure's failure underscores the vulnerability of residents in areas where flood mitigation infrastructure has been compromised.

Continuous precipitation swelled the river beyond its normal capacity, forcing water through weakened sections of the dike and inundating surrounding settlements. The combination of structural degradation and heavy rainfall created conditions that local authorities described as increasingly precarious.
