IMPASUGONG, Bukidnon — Motorists traveling the Sayre Highway must navigate alternating one-lane, stop-and-go traffic at the Atugan Bridge in Barangay La Fortuna after authorities identified serious structural defects in the crossing. The traffic management scheme, which commenced Tuesday, is expected to cause congestion along the heavily-used route through Bukidnon province.

The Department of Public Works and Highways has announced a P150-million retrofitting program to address the bridge's structural issues and restore it to full operational capacity. The scope and timeline for the rehabilitation work remain under review as engineers assess the extent of the damage.

The temporary traffic restrictions will remain in place throughout the repair period. Travelers are advised to anticipate significant delays, particularly during peak holiday periods when vehicle volume typically increases along the corridor. Authorities urged motorists to exercise patience and observe safety protocols while traversing the affected section.

The Atugan Bridge serves as a critical link along the Sayre Highway, which connects several municipalities in Bukidnon and is a major commercial and passenger transport route in the region. Officials have not yet released a completion date for the retrofitting works.
