Student groups push University of Malaya to streamline activity approval process
Two student organisations at the University of Malaya are calling for the removal of five layers of bureaucratic approval for student activities, citing excessive administrative burden and erosion of student autonomy.

Student representative bodies at the University of Malaya have urged the institution to dismantle its multi-tiered approval system for campus activities, arguing that overlapping requirements create unnecessary obstacles for societies and student groups.
Umany and Suara Siswa Universiti Malaya contend that the current five-layer approval structure duplicates oversight mechanisms and places unreasonable administrative demands on student organisations attempting to organise events and activities.
The groups have framed their appeal as a matter of institutional governance, suggesting that streamlining the approval process would enhance student autonomy while reducing redundant bureaucratic checkpoints. They argue that the existing framework diverts resources away from substantive student programming and engagement.
The call for reform reflects broader tensions at Malaysian universities regarding the balance between institutional oversight and student self-governance. Simplifying approval procedures has become an increasingly common request among student bodies across the region as institutions seek to modernise administrative processes.
The University of Malaya has not yet responded publicly to the request for changes to its activity approval framework.
