Student organisations have escalated calls against any potential pardon for former Prime Minister Najib Razak, framing the issue as a test of Malaysia's commitment to justice and accountability. Speaking ahead of a scheduled Pardons Board meeting, youth representatives stressed that releasing the high-profile convict would cross a critical threshold for public trust in the legal system. The groups emphasised that individuals found guilty of embezzling state funds should not receive clemency, arguing such action would undermine efforts to combat corruption. Najib was convicted in 2023 of abuse of power and criminal breach of trust related to the controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, which saw billions of ringgit misappropriated. The student movements have positioned their stance as a defence of national interests, contending that pardoning those convicted of large-scale financial crimes would send a damaging message about consequences for corruption at the highest levels of government.
