Students flee Delhi PG after building collapse, demand safety inspections

Overnight departures have left several paying guest accommodations in the Satya Niketan area near-empty as traumatised students refuse to occupy the premises pending safety clearances from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The exodus follows the structural failure of one building in the congested residential zone, prompting widespread concerns about the integrity of similar structures housing large student populations.

Students have migrated to temporary shelters, relatives' homes, and distant hometowns, citing insufficient confidence in their current living arrangements. Many have made their departure conditional on receiving official assurance that their accommodation buildings meet safety standards and pose no structural risk.

The incident highlights longstanding concerns about the regulation and maintenance of private rental housing in Delhi's student-dominated neighbourhoods. The MCD has not yet issued comprehensive safety assessments for buildings in the affected area, leaving property owners scrambling to retain their tenants as the academic term progresses.

Educational institutions in the region have been monitoring the situation as the uncertainty threatens to disrupt the academic calendar. Student representatives have formally requested expedited safety inspections and transparent communication from municipal authorities regarding timelines for completion of structural assessments.
