Students need practical disaster survival skills, says Tumpat MP

Tumpat Member of Parliament Mumtaz Nawi has urged educational institutions to equip students with essential disaster management competencies, contending that theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient in emergency situations.

The MP stressed the importance of embedding practical survival training into the school system, enabling young people to respond effectively when disasters and emergencies occur. Such skills would empower students to protect themselves and potentially assist others during crises, Nawi said.

The call reflects growing recognition among policymakers that disaster preparedness must become a core component of education in regions vulnerable to natural hazards. Practical training could encompass evacuation procedures, first aid, emergency communication protocols, and shelter assessment techniques.

Educational authorities in Malaysia have previously incorporated disaster awareness into school programmes, though the depth and consistency of such training varies across institutions. Advocates argue that standardized, hands-on curriculum requirements would ensure all students develop competency in emergency response regardless of their school location or resources.
