Study claims Philippines leads global ocean plastic pollution rankings

Research published in Science Advances in 2021 attributed approximately 356,371 metric tons of plastic pollution to Philippine waterways annually, accounting for roughly 36 percent of global riverine plastic emissions flowing from 4,820 rivers worldwide. The figure has since become a benchmark in global assessments of ocean plastic contamination. The study's methodology involved analyzing plastic waste reaching oceans through river systems, identifying the Philippines as a significant source given its geography, population density, and waste management infrastructure challenges.
