Study reveals different behavioural responses in ants exposed to common pesticides
Research from the University of California has found that two widely-used ant-bait insecticides produce dramatically different effects on Argentine ant behaviour before death. The findings challenge assumptions about pesticide efficacy based solely on observable ant activity.

A new study examining the effects of common ant-control pesticides has revealed that different insecticides can trigger markedly different behavioural responses in Argentine ants, even as the chemicals prove lethal.
Researchers tested two widely-available ant-bait formulations: thiamethoxam and boric acid. The results showed starkly contrasting outcomes. Thiamethoxam caused exposed ants to become hyperactive, leaving their nests and roaming extensively before succumbing to the poison. In contrast, boric acid had the opposite effect, suppressing foraging behaviour and causing affected ants to cluster inside their nests.
The distinction carries practical implications for pest management professionals. Unusual or heightened ant activity following pesticide application does not necessarily indicate treatment failure, researchers noted. Instead, increased movement may simply reflect the specific neurological effects of the chemical being deployed.
The findings suggest that evaluating pesticide effectiveness requires more nuanced assessment than observing surface-level behavioural changes. Different ant-control strategies may produce different visible signs while still achieving the intended result of eliminating colonies.
