Subic Freeport braces for surge in monthly EV shipments

SUBIC, Zambales — The Subic Bay Freeport is positioning itself as a key distribution hub for electric vehicles, with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) projecting monthly throughput exceeding 2,000 units as domestic demand for EVs intensifies.

The projection reflects growing market appetite for electric vehicles in the Philippines and comes on the heels of a recent shipment of 100 vehicles processed through the facility. The latest arrival comprised 80 hybrid and 20 fully electric units, signaling the diverse range of alternative-fuel vehicles entering the domestic market.

The SBMA's forecast underscores Subic Freeport's strategic importance as a logistics gateway, leveraging its modern port infrastructure and freeport incentives to facilitate the influx of clean-energy vehicles. The anticipated volume suggests the freeport could become a primary entry point for EV imports as manufacturers and distributors respond to the country's shift toward sustainable transportation.

The acceleration in EV shipments aligns with broader trends in Southeast Asia, where several economies are ramping up efforts to transition away from traditional combustion engines. For the Philippines, the Subic facility's capacity to handle such volumes could bolster efforts to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable to local consumers.
