Sudanese youth turn to entrepreneurship amid displacement and job scarcity

The protracted conflict in Sudan has displaced millions and decimated formal employment sectors, forcing young people to seek alternative livelihoods. With conventional job markets closed off and economic activity severely disrupted, entrepreneurship has emerged as a critical survival strategy for the youth population.

Many displaced young Sudanese have channeled their energies into artistic pursuits and creative industries, leveraging digital platforms to reach markets beyond their immediate surroundings. These ventures—ranging from digital art and design to craft production—offer a degree of independence while requiring minimal capital investment.

Small-scale businesses and informal trading have also proliferated among displaced youth populations. Without access to formal credit systems or stable employment contracts, many have launched enterprises based on local demand, including food production, retail operations, and service-based work.

The shift toward entrepreneurship reflects both necessity and resilience in the face of systemic economic collapse. While these ventures remain fragile and income often remains unpredictable, they provide displaced young Sudanese with agency and economic participation at a time when traditional pathways have been rendered inaccessible. Humanitarian agencies have noted the importance of supporting these grassroots economic initiatives as part of broader crisis response efforts.
