Sudha Murty pushes for UNESCO World Heritage status for Bihar's Barabar Caves

Murty visited the rock-cut caves in Jehanabad district on Sunday, marking her return to Patna after more than two decades. Following her arrival at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport on Saturday, the author and cultural advocate expressed her appreciation for the state's development trajectory.

During her inspection of the Barabar Caves, Murty examined the distinctive architectural features that characterise the ancient site. She commended the mirror-like polish adorning the cave walls and the unique acoustic properties that create distinctive sound and echo effects within the structures, according to a statement from the Jehanabad district administration.

Murty attributed these features to the advanced engineering prowess, scientific acumen and skilled craftsmanship of ancient India. She argued that the caves' inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage list would enhance their recognition and preserve their legacy for future generations. The move would likely increase scholarly attention and conservation efforts directed toward the site.

The Barabar Caves represent significant examples of rock-cut architecture from ancient India and have long attracted historical and archaeological interest. Murty's advocacy adds momentum to ongoing discussions about the site's international recognition and its place among South Asia's most important cultural monuments.
