Sudha Yadav, a former MP and widow of a Kargil war martyr, assumed office as the 19th Governor of Karnataka in a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for the state as she takes over from Thaawarchand Gehlot, who completed his tenure.
Yadav's elevation to the gubernatorial position reflects her extensive political background and public service. As a Kargil war widow, her appointment carries additional significance given her family's sacrifice for the nation. Her experience in Parliament and public administration has prepared her for the demanding role of custodian of constitutional duties in the state.
With her swearing-in, Karnataka now joins a growing list of Indian states with woman Governors. The appointment underscores the increasing representation of women in high constitutional offices across the country's federal structure.
As Governor, Yadav will preside over state ceremonies, provide constitutional guidance to the Chief Minister and state cabinet, and oversee various ceremonial and administrative functions. She will also serve as the Chancellor of state universities and hold responsibility for several constitutional obligations outlined in the Indian Constitution.
