Sugar prices surge past 30% inflation in majority of Indian states

Sugar prices have emerged as a significant driver of consumer inflation across India, with retail rates climbing to unprecedented levels in the new CPI measurement system. National retail inflation for sugar reached 29.80% in September, representing a considerable jump from previous months and reflecting sustained pressure on household budgets across the country.

The inflationary spike has been particularly acute in Odisha and at least 20 other states and union territories, where sugar prices have crossed the 30% threshold. This widespread price surge indicates structural challenges in sugar supply and distribution networks affecting vast swathes of the Indian market simultaneously.

While wholesale sugar inflation showed some moderation, declining to 12.72% in September from 16.29% in August, the retail segment continues to experience sharp increases. The divergence between wholesale and retail inflation suggests that price pressures at the consumer level may reflect factors beyond raw commodity costs, including distribution margins and local supply constraints.

The record retail inflation for sugar underscores growing concerns about food price stability in India, with the essential commodity's cost burden falling heavily on lower-income households that spend a significant portion of their income on food items. Policymakers and industry stakeholders are increasingly focused on stabilizing sugar markets to provide relief to consumers facing persistent price pressures.
