Sun Pharma halts eye-care drug production after quality failures
India's drug regulator has directed Sun Pharmaceutical to suspend manufacturing of ophthalmic products at its Assam facility following quality control violations. The action comes after the recall of over 330 batches of eye-care medications.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has ordered Sun Pharmaceutical Industries to cease production of eye-care drugs at its manufacturing plant in Assam due to persistent quality lapses, regulatory sources said.
The directive follows the recall of 332 batches of ophthalmic products from the facility, signalling significant concerns over manufacturing standards and quality assurance protocols at the plant.
The regulator's action underscores mounting scrutiny of pharmaceutical manufacturing practices in India. Quality control failures in drug production, particularly in therapeutically sensitive categories such as eye medications, pose direct risks to patient safety and can erode consumer confidence in domestic pharmaceutical products.
Sun Pharma is one of India's largest pharmaceutical manufacturers with an extensive portfolio spanning multiple therapeutic areas. The company has not yet issued a public statement regarding the regulatory action or its remedial measures.
The suspension remains in effect until the company demonstrates compliance with required quality standards and submits fresh certifications to the CDSCO for plant inspection and clearance.
