Sun Pharma profit dips 36% on exceptional charges despite revenue growth

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries' net profit fell 36 per cent in the second quarter, primarily due to exceptional charges totalling Rs 1,268.8 crore, the company disclosed in its latest earnings update. The one-time expenses included a United States antitrust settlement and costs related to the Organon acquisition, which significantly impacted the bottom line despite operational performance remaining stable.

The pharmaceutical major's revenue grew 12 per cent during the quarter, underpinned by robust growth in its domestic formulation business, which expanded 17.3 per cent. This expansion in India's core market reflected strong demand for its therapeutic portfolio across both prescription and over-the-counter segments.

The exceptional charges, while substantial, were largely anticipated by market observers tracking the company's legal proceedings and strategic acquisitions. Analysts noted that stripping out these one-time expenses would show underlying profitability remained resilient amid competitive pressures in global pharmaceutical markets.

Sun Pharma's performance reflects the broader dynamics facing India's leading pharmaceutical exporters, which continue to navigate regulatory challenges overseas while capitalizing on growing domestic healthcare consumption. The company's domestic formulation strength suggests it is successfully capturing market share in India's expanding pharmaceutical sector.
