Sunil Kumar named ONGC chairman for three-year term from December 2026

The government has formally approved the appointment of Sunil Kumar as chairman and managing director of ONGC, India's premier oil and gas exploration company, through a decision by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Kumar's tenure will commence on December 7, 2026, and will span three years, marking a significant transition in leadership at the state-owned enterprise.

Kumar will succeed Arun Singh, who has been helming ONGC since 2022. Singh's tenure comes to a conclusion with Kumar's takeover, as per the approved succession plan for the corporation's top executive position.

ONGC plays a critical role in India's energy security, accounting for a substantial portion of the country's crude oil and natural gas production. The appointment of senior leadership is overseen by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to ensure continuity and strategic direction at the organization.

The transition in leadership comes as India pursues ambitious energy goals and continues efforts to enhance domestic hydrocarbon production. The appointment underscores the government's focus on maintaining institutional stability at key energy sector entities during a period of evolving global energy markets.
