Sunken Military Aircraft Becomes Thriving Artificial Reef in Jordan

In 2017, Jordan sank a decommissioned Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft in the waters off Aqaba as part of an innovative marine conservation initiative. The submersion of the retired cargo plane was designed to establish an artificial reef structure that would promote biodiversity in the Red Sea and enhance the local diving tourism sector.

Since its descent to the seafloor, the aircraft wreck has evolved into a thriving ecosystem. Fish populations have colonised the fuselage and internal structures, establishing shelter among the aircraft's cavities and frameworks. Coral species have begun settling on the submerged metal surfaces, gradually transforming the human-made structure into a natural-looking reef environment that supports diverse marine organisms.

The distinctive wreck has become a sought-after destination for diving enthusiasts, offering a unique underwater experience that combines marine biology with industrial archaeology. The site's popularity has contributed to the region's reputation as a premier diving location, drawing visitors from across the world.

Despite sustaining storm damage during severe weather conditions in 2020, the aircraft remains a robust and vibrant habitat.
