The Supreme Court of India has granted permission for residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region to burst green crackers during Diwali celebrations, but only within specified time slots on November 7 and 8. The court set distinct morning and evening windows for the use of the comparatively less polluting firecrackers, aiming to balance festive traditions with environmental concerns.
The judgment comes amid ongoing efforts by the judiciary to address air quality deterioration during the festival season. Green crackers, which produce reduced particulate matter and harmful chemicals compared to conventional firecrackers, have been promoted as a compromise between celebrating Diwali and mitigating pollution.
Significantly, the court imposed a blanket ban on firecracker use in proximity to hospitals, elderly care facilities, and schools. These zones were identified as sensitive areas where noise and air pollution could pose health risks to vulnerable populations, particularly patients and children.
The order reflects the court's consistent approach to Diwali celebrations in recent years, attempting to regulate rather than prohibit the traditional practice. Authorities in the Delhi-NCR region have been directed to ensure compliance with the time restrictions and geographical limitations outlined in the judgment.
