The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over the safety of women in the Delhi-NCR region while hearing a suo motu petition on recent cases of sexual violence. A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran stressed that women should feel secure at any hour, including late at night, and that the criminal justice system must act as a strong deterrent against such offences.
Justice Pardiwala remarked that there is an urgent need to instil fear in the minds of criminals who commit heinous crimes against women. The bench's observations came during the hearing of the case, where the court reviewed the state of safety and security measures in the national capital region.
The suo motu case reflects the apex court's proactive approach to addressing the recurring problem of sexual crimes in urban areas. The bench indicated that merely registering cases and conducting trials was insufficient, and that the legal system must ensure swift justice and substantial sentences that would serve as an effective deterrent.
The court's intervention highlights growing judicial concern over the persistent threat to women's safety in metropolitan regions. The hearing underscored the need for coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies and the judicial system to ensure that crimes against women are treated with utmost seriousness and that perpetrators face swift and stringent consequences.
