Supreme Court clears path for J&K kayaker to coach at Asian Games 2026

The Supreme Court on September 10 intervened in the case of Mir Bilquis, quashing an official order that had barred the kayaker from travelling outside Jammu and Kashmir. The order had cited pending departmental inquiries and service-related conditions as reasons for the restriction.

Bilquis, who has been selected to coach India's kayaking and canoeing teams for the 2026 Asian Games, can now proceed with her international assignment following the apex court's ruling. The intervention removes a significant administrative hurdle that had threatened to keep her from the role.

The Supreme Court's order prioritised the sportsperson's opportunity to contribute to India's performance at the continental sporting event. The decision highlights the judiciary's role in resolving conflicts between administrative procedures and national sporting commitments.

With the travel clearance now granted, Bilquis is expected to join the Indian contingent in preparation for the 2026 Asian Games, which will see kayaking and canoeing competitions held as part of the expanded sports programme.
