Supreme Court Collegium backs elevation of three HC chief justices

The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday approved the elevation of three Chief Justices from various High Courts to the Supreme Court. The judges recommended for appointment are Justice Sunita Agarwal of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya of the Delhi High Court, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh of the Telangana High Court.

The Collegium's decision was made during a meeting held on Monday, with Chief Justice of India and Justices Vikram Nath, B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh and P S Narasimha in attendance. The five-member Collegium, comprising the country's senior-most judges, is responsible for recommending appointments to India's highest court.

Following standard procedure, the recommendations will now be forwarded to the Union government for formal processing and approval. The appointments, once finalized, are expected to strengthen the Supreme Court bench ahead of potential retirements among sitting judges.
