Supreme Court directs Centre to regulate transport ahead of Delhi protests

The Supreme Court has intervened to ensure that security arrangements for upcoming protests in Delhi remain proportionate and do not cause unnecessary disruption to citizens. A bench of the Court directed the Centre and relevant authorities to issue clear travel advisories and coordinate with transport operators to regulate train and Metro services during the planned demonstrations.

The Court emphasized that while maintaining public order is essential, security measures must balance the rights of protesters with the interests of the general public. The directions include a comprehensive review of proposed road closures to minimize impact on commuters and the functioning of essential services across the capital.

In addition to regulating public transport, the Supreme Court sought to identify alternative venues for protests that could accommodate demonstrators while reducing congestion in sensitive areas. The Court asked authorities to engage with protest organizers to explore these options and facilitate orderly demonstrations.

The intervention reflects the Court's approach to balancing constitutional rights of assembly with practical concerns of urban administration. Authorities have been directed to submit compliance reports outlining the measures adopted to implement the Court's directions before the scheduled protests commence.
