New Delhi — The Supreme Court on Thursday issued directions to the West Bengal government, instructing it to ensure that Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra receives full cooperation from local authorities and police during visits to her Krishnanagar constituency.
The apex court urged the state administration to make appropriate arrangements to facilitate the legislator's movement in the constituency, particularly keeping in view the upcoming Durga Puja and Diwali celebrations. The court's intervention came after concerns were raised about potential hurdles in Moitra's access to her parliamentary constituency.
The Supreme Court's directive effectively places the responsibility on the state government to coordinate with local law enforcement and administrative agencies to ensure the MP can discharge her constituency-related duties without impediment. This includes attending public events, holding meetings with constituents, and participating in festival-related activities.
The order underscores the judiciary's role in safeguarding the statutory rights of elected representatives to interact with their constituents. By directing the state machinery to facilitate such visits, the court has sought to ensure that the democratic process remains unhindered.
Moitra represents Krishnanagar in West Bengal, a constituency that falls under the Nadia district. The directive is expected to remain in effect through the festive season and beyond.
