Supreme Court eases bail conditions for accused in 2020 Delhi riots case

The Supreme Court on Friday granted relief to Meeran Haider, an accused in cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots, by modifying one of his stringent bail conditions. A bench noted the imminent marriage of the accused and found the twice-weekly mandatory police station appearances to be unduly burdensome in the circumstances.

The court reduced Haider's police reporting requirement from two times a week to once weekly, while maintaining other conditions of his bail. The modification was granted after considering representations that the frequent police station visits posed practical difficulties for the accused during his wedding preparations.

The 2020 Delhi riots, which erupted in February of that year, resulted in several criminal cases being registered across Delhi Police's jurisdiction. Multiple accused persons have been navigating the judicial process, with courts periodically reviewing bail conditions based on individual circumstances and the progress of investigations.

The Supreme Court's intervention reflects judicial sensitivity to balancing the interests of criminal justice administration with the personal circumstances of accused persons, provided the core conditions ensuring their appearance before courts remain intact. The relaxation does not absolve Haider of his legal obligations but provides necessary flexibility during his personal milestone.
