Supreme Court finds fundamental rights violated in CID officers case
Sri Lanka's Supreme Court has ruled that former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and two senior police officials violated the fundamental rights of two prominent CID officers by acting on a political agenda.

The Supreme Court determined on September 15 that former Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, former Deputy Inspector General Palitha Siriwardena, and Chief Inspector Induka Silva violated the constitutional rights of former Criminal Investigation Department Senior Deputy Inspector General Ravi Seneviratne and former CID Director Shani Abeysekara.
The court found that the three senior police officials had acted in accordance with a political agenda in their dealings with Seneviratne and Abeysekara, thereby breaching their fundamental rights guaranteed under Sri Lanka's Constitution.
The judgment comes as a significant development in ongoing disputes involving high-ranking officers from the police service. The case highlights concerns about the politicization of law enforcement institutions and adherence to constitutional protections for public officials.
The ruling underscores the Supreme Court's role in safeguarding fundamental rights and holding state actors accountable for violations of constitutional guarantees, particularly in cases involving alleged political interference in law enforcement matters.
