A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, A. G. Masih, and Sandeep Mehta has issued notice to the Gujarat government in response to a plea filed by Ahmed Bawa, also known as Abbu Abubakar Barelvi, challenging his death sentence in connection with the 2008 Ahmedabad bomb blasts.
The stay on execution comes as the apex court examines Bawa's challenge to the High Court verdict that had upheld his capital punishment. The bench has sought response from the state government on the grounds raised in the petition.
The 2008 Ahmedabad blasts, which occurred in July, were among the deadliest terror attacks in Gujarat's history, leaving dozens dead and numerous injured across multiple locations in the city. The Indian Mujahideen, a radical terrorist organization, had claimed responsibility for the coordinated bombings.
Bawa's legal challenge represents one of several ongoing cases related to the incident, as various courts continue to examine convictions and sentences handed down to those prosecuted in connection with the attacks. The Supreme Court's decision to hear the petition indicates the court's commitment to examining the merits of the case thoroughly before any capital punishment is carried out.
