Supreme Court Halves Legal Practice Requirement for Judicial Appointments

The Supreme Court of India has streamlined its recruitment process for judicial positions by cutting the legal practice requirement in half, effective from April 1, 2027. The revised framework represents a significant shift in how candidates are selected and prepared for the judiciary, aimed at accelerating the entry of qualified legal professionals into the bench.

Under the new regime, selected candidates will complete a structured one-year intensive training programme before proceeding to a year-long clerkship assignment. This two-phase preparation model maintains rigorous oversight of candidate development while reducing the prior legal practice prerequisite.

The modification addresses concerns about judicial recruitment timelines while preserving standards for judicial competency. By integrating intensive training immediately after selection, the apex court seeks to ensure that candidates possess requisite legal knowledge and judicial temperament regardless of their prior practice duration.
